The Friends of Bush Gardens is a volunteer group built on a shared love of gardening, a spirit of community service, and a sense of camaraderie. The Tuesday Morning Gardeners learn about plants and garden design, have fun while weeding, digging, planting and pruning with other like-minded folks, and at the same time help beautify this ‘gem’ of an urban park.
Friends of Bush Gardens is more than a volunteer gardening group. The Steering Committee members and other volunteers take on special projects, such as the enhancement of the municipal rose gardens or the identification and labeling of the Lord & Schryver Flowering Tree Collection. In 2011 we completed our largest project, the $222,000 restoration of the historic Bush Conservatory.
Our latest endeavor is to provide interpretative signage for the entire park. At present Salem area residents and visitors alike enjoy the park without being aware of the botanical significance or the historical importance of the park’s elements. This signage will greatly enhance their experience and add to Salem’s ‘Sense of Place’.
